Importing a boat to European Economic Area demands CE mark

Boating is a widely known adventure and leisure activity mostly common amongst North Americans and Europeans. Cruising over the high seas or just on the local water bodies has become the favourite hobby of millions. The activity has spawned the interest of people in owning a boat. The Europeans want to import the vessels from USA, the reason being economical pricing with a low rate of dollar exchange.

However, in Europe, importing a boat (importera b?t) comes with a legal liability known as CE marking. The initials CE expands to form Conformit? Europ?enne, which means European Conformity. Whether you are a manufacturer or importer, your product need to carry CE mark as an evidence of conformity with the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD). This is a prerequisite enforced on all the boats to sail on the European waters.

The RCD has outlined some safety guidelines for boats, which have to be met to protect the marine environment and boat users. This unique label means that the vessel is manufactured agreeing to the specifications laid out in the directive. The boats (sports or leisure) with a hull length between 2.5 to 24 metres lie under the Recreational Craft Directive. Even if, an importer imports USA boats (usa import b?tar), he is responsible for CE certification of the boat. In this case, a post assessment process is carried to inspect the boat and modify it according to the European Union standards. Using a boat without conformity mark is a criminal offense in European Economic Area and can charge a penalty of up to 5,000 pounds or 3 months prison.

There are firms which help in the post assessment process. These professionals carry out the inspection of your boat and report you about the modifications, if required. You need to implement all the changes stated in the analysis report for getting the certification. Once the process is complete, the firm will provide you all the essential documents like the declaration of conformity and CE mark plate.

Thus, importing a boat (importera b?t) to European Union is not an easy task. The directive was introduced to reduce the complexities of trade and provide a common standard for business. Along with the builder's plate, the vessel should show CE marking and other details including design category, maximum power permissible, additional weight allowed and number of persons on board. Other information such as the Hull Identification Number (HIN) containing model year, built year, country code and builder's code.

One of the most critical thing to acknowledge, while getting a CE certification, is the authenticity of the firm carrying assessment process. It must be certified under a notified body.

Marine Certification Scandinavia AB carries out post assessment process for USA imported boats (Usa Import B?tar). We understand that importing a boat (Importera B?t) to Europe imposes a duty on the importer and thus, helps them in executing their duty towards Recreational Craft Directive.
