Google Plays Up Nexus 7 Tablet Gaming Chops | Kotaku Australia

?Who said mobile gaming has to be casual?? quipped Google?s engineering director, Chris Yerga, at the company?s launch of its first ever tablet this morning. I wouldn?t go quite that far, but the 7-inch (1280 x 800) handheld does have attractive mobile gaming specs: a quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, gyroscope, accelerometer, and a 12-core graphics chip. At $249 in Australia next month, can you see yourself on the train with one instead of, say, a ~$349 PS Vita? Watch the Nexus 7 in action?

Video not working? click here.

Obviously the two machines are very different beasts. Google?s tablet is pretty much a blown up Android phone (with all the multi-function benefits and touchscreen gaming cons that go with that), and I?m sure you already have one of those anyway. And it looks like those 12 GPU cores aren?t exactly physical; just shader cores (though seriously feel free to correct me if I have that bass ackward). My most lingering impression really, is that Google has gone super competitive with that pricing. And Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) looks like a slick update to the Android OS.

In the video above, Yerga demonstrates Horn from Phosphor Games, who you might remember from the beautiful iPhone action/RPG Dark Meadow. Though Yerga doesn?t actually call Horn an Infinity Blade killer, he gushes that it?s ?a detailed world with the kind of environment never before seen on a mobile device. We?ve got lens flares, environmental effects and even individually rendered leaves on the trees.? Is it the kind of experience that until recently you would not have seen outside of a dedicated gaming console? Check out the refracting water droplets in the Dead Trigger demo in the video and let us know what you think in the comments.

Android favourite Gameloft is already on board also. The company will be optimising 10 titles for the Nexus 7, including upcoming games Asphalt 7 and The Amazing Spider-Man. No word yet on Dark Knight Rises though.

Head over to Gizmodo for full Nexus 7 specs.

The golfers' guide to British golf courses

?

Golf is one of the most popular sports in Britain both for players and for spectators. It is such an accessible sport for all ages which means people of all different backgrounds can share a passion for the game. If you have played before, then why not get out your old set of clubs and have a little bash.

?

To make sure that you have the most enjoyable day of golfing possible here is a compilation of the best golf clubs in Great Britain, hopefully one of them is near enough to you so that you can give it a go:

?

1. Royal St. George?s ? This course tops the list of English courses by a country mile. The Royal St. George down in Sandwich, Kent, has an illustrious history and is one of the most enjoyable courses to play on in the country. The course saw its first round of golf in 1887 and went on to be the first English course to host the Open championship. Since then it has hosted thirteen more Opens, making it the fourth highest played course in the British Open.

2. Royal County Down ? We move up to Northern Ireland for our next candidate, a course that is widely regarded as the best course in the UK. This course opened two years after the St. George in 1889 but quickly surpassed it as the more superior course. Many golfing experts who have played all over the world say County Down is the third best in the world behind Pine Valley and Cypress Point in America. Not only is this course renowned for its playability, it is also considered to be one of the most picturesque golf courses in the United Kingdom.

3. St Andrews ? Next we head to Scotland to what is probably the most well-known golf course out of our selection. This course has hosted more British Opens than any other, a whopping 28, with the last one coming in 2010. It is famous for its seaside location which can often spell high winds for the competitors, and is generally considered as a very difficult course to play. Experts suggest that this is the ninth best golf course in the world, and is by far and away the best in Scotland.

?

It is fair to say that Britain has been blessed with some of the best golf courses in the world, and so it should be considering the popularity of the sport in this country. If you have never tried the game before, get yourself out there and give it a go, it truly does have something for everyone.

Pakistan's Texas-sized problems

Despite the some cultural overlaps, the American and Pakistani paths are parting ways.

By Scott Baldauf,?Staff writer / June 28, 2012

A Pashtun boy stands at the window of his family's mud house, looking at children playing nearby on the outskirts of Peshawar, Pakistan, last week.

Years ago, before Sept. 11, when I first started traveling in South Asia, a Pakistani diplomat gave me a quick tutorial about how his people, Pashtuns, were not so very different from my own people, Texans.

We both follow conservative religions, although not so closely as we like others to believe, said the diplomat, delicately cutting into a plate of enchiladas at a Tex-Mex joint in Washington. Like Texans, we love our guns. We have very traditional beliefs about marriage and the role of women in society. We love barbecued meat. We distrust government, and hate paying taxes. We?re not as different as you might think.

As intriguing as this Pashtuns-are-Texans theory is, it is clear that the differences between the United States (which includes Texas, for the time being) and Pakistan (which includes many ethnic Pashtuns, for the time being) have become vast. US military airstrikes, aimed at Islamist militants but also killing civilians and even Pakistani soldiers, have turned many Pakistanis against what they see as a ?great Satan.? Pakistani tolerance of, and even support for, Islamist militant groups on Pakistani soil has pushed many US military commanders to conclude that Pakistan is, in effect, more an enemy than an ally. According to Christine Fair in this week?s Foreign Policy magazine, some are contemplating a new approach: either containment, or benign neglect.

At present, Pakistan no longer allows the US military or the NATO alliance to use its ports or roads to resupply NATO troops based in Afghanistan. And with US elections approaching, and Pakistan?s government increasingly fragile, it is hard to see how the two countries can bridge the gap.

Pakistani public opinion has turned sharply against the United States, with a recent Pew Research poll showing that 74 percent regard America to be an enemy, up from 69 percent in 2011, and 64 percent three years ago.

Recent headlines indicate that things are not getting better, but rather worse.

* In her?Foreign Policy piece, Ms. Fair suggests that US military are close to giving up on its tactical alliance with Pakistan. As Fair writes, Pakistan is in such a state of crisis, it couldn?t change course even if it wanted to do so.

Pakistan is in crisis. Its courts act on whim rather than jurisprudence. Its political parties are vast pools of corrupt patronage networks that aggregate elite interests while disregarding the interests of Pakistan's struggling masses. Neither elected politicians nor military rulers have had the political courage to right the nation's fiscal woes by enforcing income tax or imposing industrial and agricultural taxes on the ruling elites and their networks of influence. While the army has retrenched from a direct role in politics, it has done so likely because it has no other option: Pakistan's military suffered a mighty humiliation after the bin Laden raid, which left many citizens wondering whether their country is a failed state, a rogue state, or both.

Importing a boat to European Economic Area demands CE mark

Boating is a widely known adventure and leisure activity mostly common amongst North Americans and Europeans. Cruising over the high seas or just on the local water bodies has become the favourite hobby of millions. The activity has spawned the interest of people in owning a boat. The Europeans want to import the vessels from USA, the reason being economical pricing with a low rate of dollar exchange.

However, in Europe, importing a boat (importera b?t) comes with a legal liability known as CE marking. The initials CE expands to form Conformit? Europ?enne, which means European Conformity. Whether you are a manufacturer or importer, your product need to carry CE mark as an evidence of conformity with the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD). This is a prerequisite enforced on all the boats to sail on the European waters.

The RCD has outlined some safety guidelines for boats, which have to be met to protect the marine environment and boat users. This unique label means that the vessel is manufactured agreeing to the specifications laid out in the directive. The boats (sports or leisure) with a hull length between 2.5 to 24 metres lie under the Recreational Craft Directive. Even if, an importer imports USA boats (usa import b?tar), he is responsible for CE certification of the boat. In this case, a post assessment process is carried to inspect the boat and modify it according to the European Union standards. Using a boat without conformity mark is a criminal offense in European Economic Area and can charge a penalty of up to 5,000 pounds or 3 months prison.

There are firms which help in the post assessment process. These professionals carry out the inspection of your boat and report you about the modifications, if required. You need to implement all the changes stated in the analysis report for getting the certification. Once the process is complete, the firm will provide you all the essential documents like the declaration of conformity and CE mark plate.

Thus, importing a boat (importera b?t) to European Union is not an easy task. The directive was introduced to reduce the complexities of trade and provide a common standard for business. Along with the builder's plate, the vessel should show CE marking and other details including design category, maximum power permissible, additional weight allowed and number of persons on board. Other information such as the Hull Identification Number (HIN) containing model year, built year, country code and builder's code.

One of the most critical thing to acknowledge, while getting a CE certification, is the authenticity of the firm carrying assessment process. It must be certified under a notified body.

Marine Certification Scandinavia AB carries out post assessment process for USA imported boats (Usa Import B?tar). We understand that importing a boat (Importera B?t) to Europe imposes a duty on the importer and thus, helps them in executing their duty towards Recreational Craft Directive.

HEALTH & Vitality ? Archive ? Protect your eyes with style and ...

It looks like my kids and I need to pick up some sunglasses. Melanie Pickett, O.D., assistant professor of clinical ophthalmology at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute at the IU School of Medicine, said sunglasses are the most important component of a summer wardrobe ? for adults and kids.

Brothers from Carmel, Ind., model proper eye care.

I always wear them, but my kids? Rarely. Pickett said long-term UV exposure ? including reflection from water, sand or pavement ? can cause lasting damage, including cataracts, age-related macular degeneration and eye growths that could include cancer.

Eyes are at risk from harmful ultraviolet rays year-round, but the problem is compounded in the summer when the days are longer and people spend more time outdoors. Pickett said sunglasses of all makes and models are effective at blocking the sun?s harmful rays as long as they block UVA and UVB rays.

?Sunglasses that offer wrap-around protection are best,? she said.

Pickett?s sun-related eye-care tips include the need for contact lens wearers to wear sunglasses regardless of whether the contacts offer UV protection, and the suggestion that sunglasses be worn even in the winter because clouds do not block harmful rays.

Fourth of July

Sparklers can be hard to pass up this time of year, but don?t let the innocent-sounding name fool you: The handheld firework favorite can lead to serious eye injuries.?Jennifer Eikenberry, M.D., a comprehensive ophthalmologist at the Glick Eye Institute, says too many Fourth of July celebrations end early ?when a child or an adult has to be rushed to an emergency room with an injury caused by fireworks.?

Jennifer Eikenberry, M.D.

?Playing with fireworks can lead to head injuries, burns and eye injuries that could result in vision loss,? she said recently. ?Children are often given sparklers, and those devices can reach a temperature of 1,900 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to cause a third-degree burn.?

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 9,000 fireworks-related injuries occur each year. The Indiana Academy of Ophthalmology says children 15 or younger account for half of all fireworks injuries in the United States, with sparkers causing one third of those injuries.

Her tips include not allowing kids to play with fireworks, particularly sparklers, the importance of seeking help at an emergency room for any injury related to fireworks, and more.

Self improvement - Spirituality - Personal Growth: Do Less, Think ...

In a world crammed with information we are ironically compelled toward action and against thinking. Just to keep up with all the information we act without thinking.

Somehow we feel deceptively safe when we achieve all our deadlines, both those that are imposed on us and those we impose on ourselves. In this age of relative freedom there are a great deal more self-imposed deadlines.

Somehow we get stuck by our freedom.

Somehow we begin making decisions without thinking. And if we don't think, we have no chance of triggering thought for feeling. How do we feel about this?

Feeling is the greatest denominator for our state of existence.

Why on earth do we do the things we do? Is there a purpose, and is that purpose worthwhile? Are we compelled by purpose or are we just going through the motions?

The more time we take to adequately think, and therefore genuinely feel, the more meaning we can derive from the things we do and choose not to do. The things we do are, as a matter of introspection, checked for validity. None of us want to waste our lives, surely.

LESS IS ABUNDANTLY MORE

In a world throbbing with stuff, pretty stuff with frills and many attractive intonations, we still trust too much. We spend endless portions of time in front of computers, locked into our smart phones, collecting apps, followers, and information we may never use.

We have become hoarders against the sense of genuine need.

We are far better off rejecting ninety-eight percent of the thoughts that come into our minds about accumulation. We would be far better served to spend the time with which we rummage through the world, rummaging through our thoughts and feelings.

Only when we have done that can we know what we truly need and, therefore, want.

The skill of the new-age is critical discernment. That is, having the poise and self-discipline to say 'no' to most of the things that are simply there to distract us.

REMAINING FREE IS CONSERVING OUR LIMITED CONSCIOUSNESS

Thinking and feeling are precious. They are finite resources. When we spend our thinking and feeling on unimportant things, the important things get neglected.

If we wish to reclaim our spiritual freedom, becoming and staying more in touch with our emotional selves, and enjoying better portions of thinking capacity, we best learn to conserve our limited consciousness.

The more we learn to reject much of the world, as far as its stimuli is concerned, the more control we have over our thinking and feeling; to deploy these at the right times, in the right ways, within the important things of our lives.

Our world encourages us to do more but think and feel less. The spiritual life reverses this. We enjoy more peace, grace, and inner joy when we do less and think and feel more.

Respect More Important To Happiness Than Money - The ElderCare ...

New research from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley found that a person?s happiness is more closely tied to their standing in their community and how much respect and admiration they receive from their friends, neighbors, and co-workers than it is to how much money they have. Psychological scientist Cameron Anderson set out to examine the relationship between respect, money, admiration, and happiness. And, over the course of four studies which surveyed and followed a diverse sample of participants, Anderson found clear evidence that having influence and social acceptance was more important than accumulated wealth. Having high standing in your local ladder leads to being more integrated into the group?s social fabric, Anderson said. According to Anderson, one reason money doesn?t buy happiness is how quickly people adapt to new levels of income. More here.

That?s Not Funny

In the first episode, titled ?Something Is Wrong,? C.K. tries to break up with the woman he's been seeing, but he cannot. For one thing, he's in a funk of passivity and mute hesitation. ("What is this? A game of relationship charades?" she asks, from the other side of a booth in a diner while he digs his spoon into his regressive bowl of ice cream.) For another, well, she hasn't even met his kids, so the situation calls more for falling apart than for an active breaking up, doesn't it? For a third thing, there?s the first thing: ?This is amazing. You?re gonna make me break up with myself!? He leaves the diner, and out on the street, a backhoe is casually totaling his car. Is it funny? Yes, like Samuel Beckett.

Infographics That Don?t Suck: FindTheBest?s Comparison Charts Are Now Embeddable

findthebest logoFindTheBest, the startup led by DoubleClick founder Kevin O'Connor, has built charts comparing everything from financial advisors to dog breeds to smartphones. And now that those charts can be embedded in blog posts, you might start seeing them a lot more often. O'Connor's aim, as he's explained to me in the past, is to create the site where you can find the data you need to make a decision, presented in structured, easily understandable format. (FindTheBest is also trying to use that data to improve classified ads.) The company says it has created comparison widgets for more than 800 products and services.

For Sale By Owner - The Process of Selling Your Home Yourself

Sell your home yourself and obtain full selling price and pay no charges. Selling real estate quick hasn't been an easy job. Selling your home right to the buyer provides you with much more advantages. Because there could be no presence of a realtor who may have other interests in your mind. Individuals thinking about purchasing a house would benefit largely with fsbo purchases. Selling your home by using a property buying company is a little known technique that everybody is using to sell homes quick in the current market. Sellers have bombarded the property market because of the present economic turmoil. Selling your property the fsbo way can be quite attractive since you pay simply no commissions and possess total treatments for your sale. Selling a house through the for sale by owner style is usually debated within the real estate community. We definitely don't blame you for trying to sell your home yourself, instead of using the help of an agent.

Any amendments or supplements to buy contracts should be written around the standard addenda. These forms offer most frequent amendments and changes to buy contracts. Because of this you'll have limited exposure to qualified buyers. If your seller promotes a house like a fsbo, and a buyer who is not dealing with a real estate agent wishes to get your home, the seller pays absolutely no commission because virtually no realtors play in the process. To be able to simplify the owner finance scenario, you ought to have a potential investor prepared for the freshly developed income. These kind of homes can be found on for sale by owner listings that are available on the internet. While a for sale by owner purchase can eliminate the presence of the real estate agent in the deal, it will bring on a lot more responsibilities and dangers for buyer and seller.

Aspen homes for sale

Consumers of for sale by owner houses can meet online, with useful resources directories for lawyers, appraisers, home loan and home remodeling companies. These types of sites area websites that can help you receive serious buyers. You'll find houses or market and sell your very own for sale by owner property. You may also bargain using the seller to get a cheaper closing price, that is if you if did your homework around the house.

Selling a house is not really that simple. Selling real estate by yourself also needs plenty of work, from forms to marketing to showing possible buyers the home. Selling real estate fsbo puts sellers in a hard position. Due to the responsibilities normally handled by the realtor has become at the disposal of the vendor. Selling real estate requires an in-depth and thorough understanding of the housing market. You need to be aware of such things as how to locate the very best motivated buyers, and many other steps that result in a successful sale. Selling a property is as significant as purchasing one. I purchase properties constantly and one good thing about supplying a trader is that you can stay in the home right until your new rentals are prepared to move into. Should you ever consider selling your house keep in mind to give a trader a call.

Nearly 3 in 10 have no emergency savings

By Allison Linn

Most Americans don't have enough money saved for a rainy day -- or even a cloudy one.

A new?survey from Bankrate.com finds that 28 percent of Americans haven?t saved any money at all to cover their bills in case of a job loss or other disaster.

Only 25 percent of people had six months of savings -- the usual?amount financial experts say you should have socked away for an emergency.

And six months might not even be enough?given how long it?s taken people to find a job these days. The median duration of unemployment was 20 weeks in May, or about five months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For older Americans it can be much longer.

Another?21?percent said they had some money saved up, but not even enough to cover three months of expenses.

Taken together with those who hadn?t saved at all,?49 percent of people couldn?t go three months without a paycheck. That?s up from 46 percent last year.

Still, the figure is?better than six years ago, when a similar Bankrate.com survey found that 61 percent didn?t have three months of living expenses saved up.

The recession and the weak recovery have been a wake-up call for?many Americans, sparking an increase in savings and a decline in debt.?But recently there have been signs that people are?taking on debt again for things like cars and education, and relying more on their credit cards.

It?s not clear whether that?s by choice or necessity, although Bankrate research did show that about one-third of those?surveyed were less comfortable with their savings than they were a year ago.

The survey was based on telephone interviews with 1,000 Americans.

Rio+20, the unhappy environmental summit

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? It was hard to find a happy soul at the end of the Rio+20 environmental summit.

Not within the legion of bleary-eyed government negotiators from 188 nations who met in a failed attempt to find a breakthrough at the United Nations conference on sustainable development.

Not among the thousands of activists who decried the three-day summit that ended late Friday as dead on arrival. Not even in the top U.N. official who organized the international organization's largest-ever event.

"This is an outcome that makes nobody happy. My job was to make everyone equally unhappy," said Sha Zukang, Secretary-General of the conference, nicely summing up the mood.

In the end, this conference was a conference to decide to have more conferences.

That result was hailed as a success by the 100 heads of state who attended. Given how environmental summits have failed in recent years as global economic turmoil squashes political will to take on climate and conservation issues, the mere fact of agreeing to talk again in the future constitutes victory.

Faced with the real prospect of complete failure, negotiators who struggled for months to hammer out a more ambitious final document ended up opting for the lowest common denominator. Just hours before the meeting opened Wednesday, they agreed on a proposal that makes virtually no progress beyond what was signed at the original 1992 Earth Summit, removing the kind of contentious proposals activists contend are required to avoid an environmental meltdown.

"We've sunk so low in our expectations that reaffirming what we did 20 years ago is now considered a success," said Martin Khor, executive director of the Geneva-based South Centre and a member of the U.N. Committee on Development Policy.

Indeed, the word "reaffirm" is used 59 times in the 49-page document titled "The Future We Want." They reaffirm the need to achieve sustainable development (but not mandating how); reaffirm commitment to strengthening international cooperation (just not right now); and reaffirm the need to achieve economic stability (with no new funding for the poorest nations).

Some of the biggest issues activists wanted to see in the document that didn't make it in included a call to end subsidies for fossil fuels, language underscoring the reproductive rights of women, and some words on how nations might mutually agree to protect the high seas, areas that fall outside any national jurisdictions.

"We saw anything of value in the early text getting removed one by one. What is left is the clear sense that the future we want is not one our leaders can actually deliver," said Greenpeace executive director Kumi Naidoo. "We now need to turn the anger people around the world are feeling into creative, thoughtful and meaningful action."

On the "glass half full" side of things, while the effort to make progress on multilateral talks among the collective U.N. body were a disappointment, the big gathering produced nearly 700 promises and advances made by individual countries, companies and other organizations, in total worth about $500 billion if actually followed through

For instance, the U.S. agreed to partner with more than 400 companies, including Wal-Mart, Coca- Cola and Unilever, to support their efforts to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains by 2020.

Andrew Deutz, director of international government relations at the Nature Conservancy, pointed out that Indonesia, Australia and Colombia all made strong commitments to protecting oceans in their national waters, in part to ensure future food security.

"Monday morning, the challenge will be to go back home and hold governments and companies accountable for the commitments they made here and help them get things done," he said.

Despite the shifting global economic order, with the rise of nations like Brazil and China and a host of other "middle-income" countries, critics said negotiators still argued along the lines of old "north-south" arguments that pit richer developed nations against developing nations.

The Group of 77 nations that represents the poorest on the globe maintained their demand that richer nations in Europe and the U.S. recognize their "historic debt" eating up a much greater amount of the globe's resources since the industrial revolution began 250 years ago. They say rich nations should finance environmental improvements in the poorer nations, and also freely transfer technology that would help the developing nations use more renewable energy and build cleaner industrial sectors.

"Everything has been kicked down the lane a few years, we'll have to wait to formalize sustainable development goals and make the transition to a green economy," said Muhammed Chowdhury, a lead negotiator of Group of 77. "It's not a good scenario."

However, a U.S. delegate member said that countries can no longer debate issues with an eye on the past, that once poor nations are becoming rich, and that anybody looking for the Rio+20 summit to somehow reach a magical agreement and solve complicated environmental and development challenges would be sorely disappointed.

"I think the expectation that there is one document or one approach that can solve one of the major questions of our time ? how do you maintain economic growth and protect the environment? ? there's not one paper that can do that," said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs Dr. Kerri-Ann Jones.

"This is a process. We have to embrace it as a process, look at the positive things we have done, and keep working, as there is much more to do."

'Brave' hits bull's-eye at the box office

By Pamela McClintock, The Hollywood Reporter

Pixar

"Brave" earned $66.7 million on its opening weekend.

Fears that a female heroine would slow down "Brave" proved unfounded as the animated tentpole opened to a whopping $66.7 million at the domestic box office -- the fifth best debut of all time for a Pixar title.

PHOTOS: From 'Toy Story' to 'Brave': Your Essential Guide to Pixar's Movies

"Brave,"?continuing Pixar's unblemished record of opening all of its movies to No. 1, also scored the second highest June opening for an animated pic after Pixar's "Toy Story 3" ($110.3 million). Overseas, the Pixar and Disney title debuted to $13.5 million in 10 markets.

The 3D event pic -- receiving an A CinemaScore in North America -- marks Pixar's 13th film and is the first movie in the company's history to feature a female lead. "Brave" did skew female (57 percent), but got plenty of male attention.

"You have to draw men and boys as well to see this number," Disney executive president of worldwide distribution Dave Hollis said. "The themes in the movie -- bravery, fighting for your fate -- transcend gender."

Hollis credited Pixar/Disney animation chief John Lasseter, producer Katherine Sarafian and directors Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman for delivering an "enveloping experience" that drew both families (66 percent) and adults.

One troubling statistic: 3D revenues only made up 34 percent of "Brave's"?opening gross, furthering worries that families find the upcharge for a 3D ticket too expensive.

Still, family product ruled the box office all the way around. DreamWorks Animation and Paramount holdover "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" fell to No. 2 in its third weekend with an estimated $20.2 million for a domestic cume of roughly?$157.6 million ("Madagascar 3"?opened to $60.1 million).?

Animation also ruled overseas, where "Madagascar 3" stayed at No. 1 for the third weekend in a row, grossing $30.1 million from 44 markets to race past the $200 million mark. The pic has now earned $208.4 million internationally for an impressive worldwide total of $366 million.

Managing only a third-place domestic finish was 20th Century Fox's 3D genre epic "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter." The R-rated film, playing like a horror title, grossed a soft $16.5 million in its opening. Fox had predicted a debut in the $15 million range -- considering there are no big stars in the film --? but box office observers believed it could get to $20 million.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov and featuring Tim Burton in the producer's seat, "Abraham Lincoln" received a C+ CinemaScore. The pic's cast is led by Benjamin Walker.

"Abraham Lincoln,"?costing $68 million to produce, features the storied U.S. president as a vampire hunter and is based on the novel by?Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote the adapted screenplay. The film is an important test for the "mash-up" genre, with Lionsgate queued up to make the film adaptation of Grahame-Smith's book "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies."

Fox believes "Abraham Lincoln,"?which skewed male, will have good legs.

"Audiences will continue to seek out Timur's daring and brilliant vision of 'Abraham Lincoln,' " Fox's incoming president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson said.

The news wasn't good for Steve Carell-Keira Knightley indie pic "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," which debuted to $3.8 million from 1,625 locations. The Focus Features title, directed and written by Lorene Scafaria, came in No. 10, just ahead of fellow Focus pic "Moonrise Kingdom," which grossed a pleasing $3.4 million from only 395 theaters for a pleasing cume of $11.6 million.

"It's disappointing. The right people turned up to see "Seeking a Friend," but they didn't come in volume," Focus president of distribution Jack Foley said.

At the specialty box office, Woody Allen's new entry "To Rome With Love" got off to a strong start, grossing $379,371 from five theaters for a sizeable location average of $75,874 -- easily the best of the weekend. Sony Pictures Classics, which distributed Allen's box office hit "Midnight in Paris," is once again handling domestic distribution duties for the filmmaker.

Elsewhere, New Line and Warner Bros.' troubled musical "Rock of Ages" fell to No. 6 in its second weekend, grossing $8 million for a 10-day domestic cume of $28.8 million. Adam Sandler's comedy "That's My Boy," likewise troubled, fell to No. 7 in its second outing, grossing $7.9 million for a 10-day total of $28.2 million.
